In 1488 Bartolomeus Dias was the first European to sail around what would become known as the Cape of Good Hope during an expedition in search of a sea route to India. Dias called the Cape Cabo das Tormentas or “The Cape of Storms” due to many ships that were caught in the Cape’s winter storms and wrecked.

John II of Portugal would later rename the Cape to Cabo da Boa Esperance or “Cape of Good Hope”, because it made a trading route to the east possible.
